MV Summer Concert raises £1300 for Vista

If you were driving past St Andrew’s Church on Saturday 19th August in the afternoon and wondered what was going on, then read on...

The Church was the venue for a sight loss exhibition featuring 15 exhibitors. They included The Stoneygate Eye Hospital, Costco Opticians’ optometrists, the Macular Society, Glenfield NHS Diabetic eye screening, Vista Rothley charity clothes shop, Centrebus Hop! Bus, St John ambulance, Vista mobile support van, Glyn’s Super Whippy ‘Eyes Cream’ van, and several interactive activities allowing visitors to appreciate what it is like to have sight loss.

Lesia Smaditch, the organiser of the event said “With Vista’s Kathleen Rutland home on our doorstep, I thought it would be a great opportunity to raise awareness of sight loss as well as promote good eye health. The exhibition was a great success with around 150 people visiting the various stands. Everyone I spoke to talked about new things they had learned about sight loss. I’m so happy to share with you all that we raised a wonderful £1300 for Vista and I know that the kids will benefit greatly from this money. Thank you to everyone for volunteering or participating.”

The evening ended with the Musical Village Summer concert featuring the beautiful voice of soprano soloist Denise Leigh who became famous after winning Channel 4’s Operatunity. She and her accompanist, Stefan Andrusyschyn, wowed the audience with a variety of film music. The concert was compered by Dave Andrews DL. He introduced Libby Clegg, an inspirational paralympic gold medal winning sportswoman who spoke about her life.

Local musicians, Mark Hemmings and Andy Carvill, introduced the audience to the soothing sound of the harmonica and Slavko Madylus charmed the audience with his personal stories and songs from Ukraine. Musical Village duets, ensembles and choirs entertained with a range of music for every taste, but it was the Vista Voices choir and soloists who stole everyone’s hearts with their amazing singing.

Thanks to The Stoneygate Eye Hospital for sponsoring the event and to St Andrew’s Church for providing us with such a wonderful and versatile venue.

Leicester's Concert for Ukraine

Sunday 8 May 4pm at De Montfort Hall, Leicester

Hosted by the BBC’s Amy Payne and ITV’s Rajiv Popat, the concert promises to be a powerful and uplifting family event of hope and reflection.

Amy PayneRajiv Popat

100% of ticket sales will be donated directly to the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

The concert will showcase a vibrant celebration of Ukrainian dance and music by first, second and third generation Ukrainians from across the UK including the award-winning Orlyk Ukrainian Folk Dance Ensemble, one of the few Ukrainian acts left in the world that dance and sing to live music.

It will also feature world music from other Leicester communities alongside well-known songs from musicals.

We will be joined by many artists and groups including West End actor and singer Jonny Fines (Grease, Annie and Curve’s An Officer and a Gentleman), EAGA Gospel choir (Britain’s Got Talent live semi-finalists), Shiamak Midlands Bollywood dancers, a massed community choir of singers from across Leicestershire, dancers from the Curve Young Company, Leicester Cathedral Choir singing John Rutter’s newly composed A Ukrainian Prayer, plus Rozanna Madylus (British-Ukrainian Mezzo-Soprano), David Morris (tenor and former Swingle Singer), Denise Leigh (soprano), Mike Dewis (baritone), and a variety of other musicians.

Tickets can be bought in person at De Montfort Hall, by phone on 0116 233 3111 or online at www.demontforthall.co.uk

Organiser Lesia Smaditch said:

“This disaster has affected so many innocent lives, and the suffering that we have seen on our screens is unimaginable. It has been overwhelming to see the support for Ukraine from so many people across the world, and now I would like to be part of Leicester’s message of support to Ukrainians wherever they may be.

This concert promises to be a powerful and uplifting family event of hope and reflection. I am so grateful to Leicester City Council for its generosity and now ask that as many people as possible from Leicester join with me and continue to show that #LeicesterStandsWithUkraine
